De Gea was a big help and influence for Mata when he joined United back in January and by the sounds of it, Herrera got the same warm Spanish welcome.
“I know they are very happy,” Herrera said in his first interview as a United player.
“I was talking to them and they told me that this is the biggest club in the world and that we have a very good squad. We are very good friends and I am sure that they will help me to adapt and get to know the club.”
Herrera’s signing begins the creation of a new Manchester United under Louis van Gaal and he made it very clear what his greatest strength as a footballer was, an asset which makes it very clear why Van Gaal wanted him.
He added: “I am a central midfielder. I think one of my best qualities is I want to participate, I always want the ball and want to help my team-mates.”
That is one of the players who United have desperately missed in midfield, a ball carrying midfielder who has the ability and desire to bridge the gap between defence and attack which is exactly the type of midfielder who can thrive under Van Gaal.
Next season was always going to be exciting with a new manager at the helm but backed with players like Herrera, the excitement has already reached fever pitch and it isn’t even July yet.
