Manchester United’s pursuit of Ander Herrera has now been unveiled as a Manchester United player and for the first time in years, we have signed a genuine ballplaying central midfielder.
Using Squawka’s comparison matrix, we took a look at how Herrera performed last year in comparison to Carrick, Cleverley, Fellaini and Fletcher. The results showed just how much better Herrera is than any of our current options.
He has been better in every single department and even had more shots, goals, assists and dribbles than Carrick, Cleverley, Fellaini and Fletcher’s combined total – a statistic which is both phenomenal and damning at the same time. Phenomenal for how good Herrera is in comparison and equally so, damning for how poor United’s midfield really is.
Even when broken down to a per 90 minutes basis, Herrera is still streaks ahead of United’s other midfielders in almost every department.
Herrera might not be the name many expected and stats are certainly not the be all and end all, but it’s obvious how much he will improve United’s midfield if the deal can be completed.
