Athletic Bilbao are a notoriously difficult club to deal with when it comes to signing one of their players and they have decided to be very public with proceedings surrounding Manchester United’s bid for Ander Herrera.
In fact, they seem to be poking fun at the current situation regarding Herrera.
Athletic Club’s official account retweeted the fact they were trending in Manchester following the announcement of the news. An official account retweeting the fact they are trending elsewhere? They’re lapping up the attention.
Also, the fact they tweeted the news in English is indicative of how public they want this forum to be. They want to be seen as a club who are digging their heels in to make it difficult for Herrera to leave, something they are doing very well.
Furthermore, Athletic Club’s official Twitter account decided to favourite the following tweet where a Scouser is laughing at the rejected bid. Has the account been hacked?
It’s politically driven to ensure the club isn’t blamed for Herrera’s departure and the fact they have decided to go so public with it is indicative of that. While United would have been aware Athletic were going to be difficult, I’m not sure they would have predicted this sort of reaction from Athletic.
