Manchester United have agreed to sign Holland and PSV defender Stefan de Vrij for a fee in the region of £7m, according to Corriere Dello Sport in Italy.
De Vrij, 22, had been linked very strongly with a move to Lazio, which is why the Italian press are reporting on his future, but United have now supposedly swooped for the centre-back.
The reports from Corriere Dello Sport were picked up by the British press and reported in varying degrees – Metro said that a deal was in place to bring De Vrij to Old Trafford while the Daily Mail suggested a formal bid was in the offing rather than already agreed on.
Louis van Gaal‘s presence as United manager was always going to see the club linked with a plethora of Dutch targets and that has been reported as the defining factor in these De Vrij stories.
United certainly need a new centre-back this year following the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic and if these reports are proved to be correct, Van Gaal has chosen De Vrij to be that reinforcement.
