Manchester United’s pursuit of William Carvalho during last season was relentless and after scouting him over a dozen times, a move for the 22-year-old midfielder looked more like a formality than anything else.
The British press took it a step further by suggesting that United already had a deal in place for Carvalho but those reports were never substantiated out in Portugal.
Now, the shoe is on the other foot and multiple reports from the Portuguese press including O Jogo and Zero Zero suggest that United are back in for Carvalho and have opened negotiations, with Record reporting that a €30m bid is in the pipeline.
Since Portugal were knocked out of the World Cup, the Carvalho rumours have stirred back into life, thanks in no small part to the fact Carvalho said he was uncertain he was going to stay at Sporting Lisbon, backtracking on previous comments where he pledged his future to the Portuguese club for next season.
At €30m, Carvalho would be an excellent buy. He’s capable of driving forward with the ball and scoring goals but it is his ball retention which is his most attractive asset and alongside Ander Herrera, he could form a very balanced partnership.
His release clause might be €45m but with Sporting Lisbon sitting on a loan in excess of €400m, there is room for negotiation from United’s perspective despite the fact they were in profit last season.
