Nigel de Jong’s World Cup campaign is over after it was confirmed that he had ruptured his groin muscle and would be sidelined for anything up to four weeks.
Louis van Gaal was a big fan of De Jong and his presence in the midfield was a key component of Holland’s impressive performances so far at the World Cup, so his absence will be a big loss to their chances of winning the tournament out in Brazil.
Kevin Strootman’s injury was a devastating blow for Holland prior to the World Cup and clearly they aren’t getting any luck following the injury to De Jong.
It will be intriguing to see how Van Gaal manages to cope with this latest injury setback given that two of his first choice central midfielders are now sidelined but as he has shown with his team selection and substitutes so far, he’s more than capable of making some magic happen. Given how often United’s players seem to get injured over the course of a season, Van Gaal will certainly need to have that flexibility to adapt when things go wrong.
