Angelo Henriquez and Guillermo Varela made their way back to Manchester yesterday in preparation for the beginning of pre-season training with United.
The duo would have enjoyed the summer break with the World Cup festivities out in South America but their countries fortunes couldn’t have been more opposite, with Henriquez’s Chile winning lots of fans while Varela’s Uruguay embarrassed themselves with the Suarez situation.
Last year, Henriquez spent the season on loan with Real Zaragoza and enjoyed a fruitful run of goalscoring form before injury blighted the second half of his season. Meanwhile, Varela was a regular in United’s Under-21s side that finished runners up in the Under-21s Barclays Premier League.
This season, both should be coming back to United full of excitement because of Louis van Gaal, a man famous for giving youngsters a chance. In all honesty, Varela is far more likely to get a shot at the first-team as United aren’t spoilt for right-backs but Henriquez will still be keen to impress the new boss.
Both players should be part of the pre-season tour squad and if they really impress Van Gaal, then they might be able to make opportunities of their own.
