Despite being in negotiations with Juventus over the transfer of Patrice Evra, Manchester United have not re-opened discussions about Arturo Vidal, according to Gianluca di Marzio.
Evra, 33, is on the verge of joining Juventus and many saw the Frenchman’s move as a means for United to talk about Vidal with the Serie A champions but Di Marzio is reporting that talks didn’t happen, something which would be a real shame given that it was a golden opportunity to do so.
We felt Evra’s departure to Juventus could help pave the way for Vidal to United because it would establish contact between the clubs, and we stand by that. The Evra deal will have given United a way in to discuss the prospect with Juventus, even if they didn’t force the issue during negotiations over Evra.
That doesn’t mean to say United will get Vidal but it at least opens up a communication line should United want to pursue the midfielder, and they most certainly should.
We’ve made no secret of our love for Vidal who is without question one of the best box-to-box midfielders in world football right now and in the context of how much Juan Mata cost when Chelsea didn’t even want him, then £40m+ for Vidal is not a figure United should balk at, it’s one Ed Woodward should frantically try and pay.
