Robin van Persie starts but Van Gaal is taking a risk

by Sam Peoples

Robin van Persie will start tonight in Holland’s Third Place play-off match against hosts Brazil.

Despite Louis van Gaal admitting it was a nothing game, he has fielded a very strong XI including Van Persie and Arjen Robben leading the attack once again.

Van Persie has been out of form in the past two games after what was an electric start to the tournament and is clearly not 100% match fit, so it is a slight surprise to see him start what is essentially a friendly. Maybe Van Gaal simply sees the game as another opportunity to improve his fitness.

Of course, Van Gaal knows his players more than anybody else but there is a risk of injury playing Van Persie from the start in the conditions and after how much football the Dutchman has played. Hopefully, he comes through without trouble.
