Talk has continued to gather pace today regarding Arturo Vidal and Manchester United with more reports linking the Chilean with a move to Old Trafford.
Last night, Spanish newspaper Marca reported that the Chilean midfielder was ‘packing his bags for United’ and earlier this week Vidal himself admitted he would love to play for ‘one of the biggest clubs in the world’ in United, something which fuelled the heavy speculation.
At this stage, there are a lot of mixed messages about whether United are close to signing Vidal depending on who you are listening to.
Peter Spencer, Manchester Evening News: “Wondering which will sign first…mangala or vidal…both imminent.”
James Ducker, The Times: “From what I was told last night, I think the Vidal rumours have taken on a life of their own. I don’t believe United are actively pursuing him at this stage and although I’m not saying things won’t change, it looks like Juventus are really trying to create a market for him, in much the same way as Benfica did with Nicolas Gaitan a couple of years back.”
Adam Crafton, Daily Mail: “Manchester United denying that Vidal move is imminent and play down speculation. Believe he very much remains a leading target though.”
The leaks of information from United have clearly been closed up under Louis van Gaal and these contrasting stories are indicative that stream of information has stopped.
Are United close to signing Vidal? Maybe. United also denied David Moyes was being sacked the day before it happened, so you could look at their denial from that point of view.
With United flying out on Friday for the pre-season tour, the club would have to move fast for Vidal if it is the case that a deal for the 27-year-old is imminent.
