Having been linked with a move to Manchester United back in May, the saga surrounding Thomas Vermaelen rumbles on with the Metro reporting that the Belgian defender could be involved in a player exchange rather than an outright purchase.
With this story resurfacing, contrasting reports are coming out of Italy which suggest Vermaelen might not end up at Old Trafford, but instead find himself at the Stadio San Paolo.
However, reports coming from La Repubblica go as far as saying Vermaelen could be a Napoli player come September.
La Repubblica details an interview held with Napoli player Dries Mertens and Four Four Two magazine in which Mertens admits to telling his international team mate Vermaelen how great a city Naples is in a hope to turn his head.
Napoli are believed to see Vermaelen as an ideal candidate to bolster their squad in a bid to bridge the gap with champions Juventus who finished 24 points ahead in the last campaign.
It is clear that Wenger is willing to let Vermaelen leave the Emirates this summer and although Old Trafford has been the likely destination for a long-time, there seems to competition for the player’s signature.
