Marnick Vermijl is disappointed Louis van Gaal didn’t take him on the US Tour and revealed his agent Nico Vaesen is on the lookout for a new club.
Van Gaal chose to take Rafael and Chris Smalling as United’s two right-back options to leave the likes of Vermijl, Varela and Janko to play with the Reserves on their pre-season tour, something which has irked Vermijl after previous promises from David Moyes that he would be part of the tour.
“Obviously that’s a disappointment,” Vermijl said.
“Under the previous manager, David Moyes, it was indeed agreed that I could go on tour.
“Van Gaal took me aside on Thursday. He said he took a small group, two players per position, Rafael and Chris Smalling in my case. I’d like to have gone but he said ‘I could take you but you wouldn’t get any minutes’. I had hoped my first encounter with Van Gaal would have been different. He told me to keep working, that in football everything can change very quickly. He was adamant.
“In the meantime, my agent Nico Vaesen is on the lookout for a new club. After my good season at NEC, I definitely want to play.”
Vermijl has every right to be frustrated by not going on tour given that right-back is a position where United need fresh faces but voicing his concerns will do him no favours with Van Gaal.
His comments are also strange when you consider Vermijl said he’d only stay at United if Moyes left the club as it is clear now that wasn’t the case as first team football was the lure, rather than the manager himself.
Everything is a fresh start under Van Gaal just like it was last year under Moyes and Vermijl does have an opportunity to break into the first-team but as he is actively looking for another club, his future may be away from Old Trafford.
