Manchester United to bid £17.4m for Daley Blind – report

Manchester United are set to table a £17.4m bid for Holland International Daley Blind, according to reports from Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Blind, son of former Ajax captain Danny, impressed at the World Cup for the Oranje and his versatility as both a left-back and defensive midfielder means he could be an attractive prospect for Louis van Gaal.

The 24-year-old, who netted against Brazil in the World Cup third place play-off, is one of a host of Dutch players to have been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer.

Blind was on holiday in Barcelona last week and Gazzetta dello Sport suggests United are ready to test Ajax’s resolve with an offer of around £17m, while Van Gaal continues to keep an eye on Thomas Vermaelen and Feyenoord’s Stefan De Vrij.

Blind would not only offer cover for Shaw at left-back, a role he occupied for Holland at the World Cup when the Oranje opted for a 5-3-2 or a 4-3-3 formation, but he could also provide a solid alternative to the injured Michael Carrick in the middle of the park, a position he’s normally deployed in for Ajax.

Van Gaal, who coached Blind’s father during his spell at Ajax, is a known admirer of Blind’s tactical diligence and versatility and knows everything about the 24-year-old after managing him for Holland, so United pursuing him would come as no surprise.
