Luke Shaw didn’t have any second thoughts about joining Manchester United once he found out about the interest, he has told NBC in an interview which offers fantastic insight into United’s new signing.
Since January, United’s name had been in the pot for Shaw and despite interest from other clubs including Chelsea, Shaw made it abundantly clear there was only ever one club he wanted to join.
Speaking to NBC about United’s interest, he said: “It’s great. When I found out they were interested in me I didn’t think twice.
“Manchester United are the biggest club in the world. When I found out they wanted to buy me, I spoke to my agent, he got in touch with Southampton and it got done. I am really excited and happy to be here.”
Ed Woodward spoke only a few days ago about United only signing players who wanted to play for the club – step forward Shaw. Once he found out about United’s interest, there was only one place he wanted to move and that desire to play for the club can’t be underestimated.
As for how he his pre-season is going, Shaw praised how forthwith Louis van Gaal is in his communications with the players and admitted the Dutchman’s track record of placing faith in youngsters was crucial in his decision to move to United.
He added: “I’ve only been here two days, we’ve had two training sessions and the manager has been working on what formation he wants to put in. It has been quite tough but I expected that when I first came back to preseason.
“He seems like a great manager, he is straightforward and wants to get the best out of the players. That is something that is good for me so hopefully I will improve under him. One of the important things for me was that I heard he was good at producing younger players. He likes playing younger players and he has faith in them. That was another big thing for me, that he will give youngsters a chance.”
Shaw also made it clear what his ambitions were with United in his first season at the club – to win trophies and leave last season’s disastrous campaign in the past. When questioned if silverware was the aim this year, Shaw said: “Of course it is.
“You look at the season we had last season and everyone here wants to improve on that, to try and win trophies. That is what we are going to be aiming for. First thing for us is to have a good preseason, get everyone fit and raring to go for the season. This season, we want to come back as the Man United everyone once knew. Hopefully we can do that, push on and win some trophies.”
