Yesterday, Herrera wore the No. 21 shirt against LA Galaxy while Shaw wore No. 28 and while those numbers will remain for the tour, MUTV’s Stewart Gardner confirmed that they are not certain to be the final numbers for next season as they are yet to be decided.
That being said, there’s every chance that Herrera’s squad number will indeed remain as No. 21 as the Spaniard revealed a couple of clues to suggest that will be the case. Back in Athletic Bilbao, No. 21 was the shirt Herrera wore so it would make perfect sense for him to hold onto that number with United.
As for Shaw, he could technically keep the vacant No. 28 shirt but there is only one number that people have in mind – the No. 3 shirt left vacant by Patrice Evra. Shaw has insisted he isn’t daunted by the prospect of filling Evra’s shoes and what better way to show faith in him than by symbolically giving him Evra’s shirt number?
It shouldn’t be too long before the final shirt numbers are revealed but with so many other famous shirts still vacant including No. 11 left behind by Ryan Giggs, there’s some big opportunities for players to take on some symbolic numbers and try to follow in their predecessors footsteps.
