Chris Smalling – Substituted at half time against LA Galaxy, Smalling should be fresh to start on Saturday.
Phil Jones – Jones will be hoping for more appearances in his favoured centre-back position.
Jonny Evans – Evans should make-up the defence in Van Gaal’s new three-man back-line.
Antonio Valencia – An injury to Rafael means Valencia should start at right wing-back for the second consecutive game.
Shinji Kagawa – Having played in central midfield during the second half against LA Galaxy, it appears Van Gaal may favour Kagawa as a deeper midfielder, especially when considering the sparse midfield options and the fact both Darren Fletcher and Ander Herrera played 90 minutes just two days ago.
Tom Cleverley – Cleverley can be expected to play from the start against Roma.
Tyler Blackett – There have been suggestions that Blackett will start against Roma and it may be in the left wing-back position, thus giving Van Gaal a chance to view the youngster in a different position to the left centre-back area he featured in against LA Galaxy.
Juan Mata – Mata will probably start once again in the hole with Kagawa in a deeper role.
Wayne Rooney – Rooney is the potential captain for this friendly.
Danny Welbeck – Welbeck will probably start again up front with his aerial ability and pace potentially causing multiple problems.
Van Gaal is set to continue with what he calls a ‘3-4-3’ formation. This means that his three first-choice centre-backs should start together again. Other roles are up for grabs but it is likely the Dutch manager will select what he deems to be his first-team, pending fitness.
