Wayne Rooney was deservedly named man of the match against AS Roma for his performance which saw him play a hand in all three of Manchester United’s goals.
In the first half, Rooney broke the deadlock with a world class finish from just outside the area and then followed it up only a few minutes later with a trademark pinpoint long pass that Juan Mata exquisitely finished.
Then just before half-time, Rooney clinically dispatched a penalty to give United a commanding 3-0 lead. Rooney was substituted at half-time for Nani but the damage had already been done as United held on to the lead despite a spirited comeback from Roma to bring the score back to 3-2.
That was Rooney at his influential best and there is now a growing belief that Louis van Gaal will be able to get the most out of Rooney.
Much was said about whether Rooney would enjoy a good relationship with Van Gaal but what videos of high fives in training and performances like show is that so far, so good.
