Manchester United include new trialists in squad for Milk Cup tournament

by Tracey Germaine

Paul McGuinness has announced a 17 man squad including trialists Oscar Borg and Ogo Obi for the Dale Farm Milk Cup.

United are the current holders of the Premier Section and will kick off their campaign to retain their title against the Gold Coast Academy on Monday evening.

In recent years, United have done very well in the prestigious youth tournament featuring in five of the last seven finals and will hope to continue that this year. United lifted the trophy for the fifth time in 2013 following a 1-0 success over Co Tyrone with six of those involved again this time around appearing in the final. Last time around, the squad’s captain Andreas Pereira picked up the player of the tournament award.

Here is Manchester United’s full squad:

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson, George Dorrington, Oliver Byrne

Defenders: Charlie Scott, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Ro-Shaun Williams, Axel Tuanzebe, Tyler Reid, Tyrell Warren, Oscar Borg (trialist)

Midfielders: Jordan Thompson, Zachary Dearnley, Callum Gribbin, Demetri Mitchell, Travis Johnson

Strikers: Marcus Rashford, Ogo Obi (trialist)

Manchester United v Gold Coast Academy, 20:00 Monday 28th July, Coleraine Showgrounds

Co. Armagh v Manchester United, 20:00 Tuesday 29th July, Riada Stadium

Manchester United v CSKA Moscow, 20:00 Wednesday 20th July, Brandywell Stadium

The young Reds have been drawn in Group D of the Premier division with Otago and Bohemians making up the six-team group but United won’t be playing either of those teams in the group stage.

After Wednesday’s games the 24 teams in the Premier section of the Milk Cup will be ranked according to their points. Where United rank at that point will determine which teams they will face off against for their sections silverware.

The semi-finals matches will be played on Thursday 31 July.  Win or lose, the teams will play again on Friday 1 August as they either try to win the final of their section or play for a place.
