There was a genuine sense of excitement at the announcement Powell was going to join United on tour but with only a few days left until the team returns, he looks unlikely to play any part in it at all.
Powell, 20, has not been playing with United’s reserves team either in the pre-season friendlies so he has almost gone off the radar completely.
The only hint he gave as to what he was up to was an update on his Twitter account a couple of days ago which made it look like he was involved in pre-season training in some capacity.

Powell may simply not have recovered from injury in time to join the tour and is training back at Carrington but hopefully he will be fit in time for the start of the new season.
He is very talented and has huge potential but after playing further up the pitch in his last two seasons, if United see his future in central midfield then he should start to play there more often.
Having someone like Louis van Gaal as a mentor will be a great thing for Powell at this point in his career and if Van Gaal has him in his plans, it’d be great to see him join the first team squad as soon as possible. However, if Powell is not going to get a chance in central midfield at United this season, he needs to be loaned out, preferably to a Premier League club, to help him continue to improve as a player.
