Confidence can change players. You’d have laughed before the tour if you were told Ashley Young was going to thrive at left wing-back for Manchester United but that’s precisely what he has done.
Tonight against Real Madrid, he was outstanding for the 45 minutes he was on the pitch and looked like a completely different player to the Young who was bereft of anything good last season.
The Louis van Gaal effect really has gripped the squad hasn’t it?
Style and panache. Van Gaal has got United playing some of their best football in years. It’s only the pre-season so results aren’t important in the grand scheme of things but watching United play free flowing football is fantastic, especially after what happened last season.
It wasn’t just Juan Mata and Ander Herrera who orchestrated the pass and move football either as the whole team played their part. Darren Fletcher in particular was integral in United’s passing moves and showed he has plenty to offer United this season.
Ashley Young 1-0
Ashley Young 2-1
Javier Hernandez 3-1
There’s more where this came from. United’s attacking football on tour has been great to watch and every player has contributed to it, even Javier Hernandez who has looked out of sorts for a long time. The squad has really taken to Van Gaal’s style of football and the goals have been flooding in.
