Nick Powell was supposed to join up with Manchester United whilst out on tour in America but didn’t make an appearance and Louis van Gaal has explained that the midfielder requires more work before he is ready to play.
It was presumed Powell may have suffered a set-back with his fitness which stopped him from joining United on tour and it sounds like that was indeed the case.
However, the mere fact Powell is in Van Gaal’s thought process is a good sign he will be given the opportunity to be part of United’s first team by the Dutchman this year.
“I wish that we start a little bit later,” Van Gaal told Manutd.com when discussing the Premier League.
“For example, Marouane Fellaini, Adnan Januzaj and Nick Powell are not here. Robin van Persie started yesterday so we are not ready yet. But, okay, we will have to train in the season more than ever to make sure we are prepared.”
Like Reece James, Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard, Powell is a youngster who could well break through into the senior team at Old Trafford this year if he makes the most of his opportunities but there are clearly concerns about his fitness at this stage.
As for players who could be leaving United this summer, Van Gaal reiterated his stance that players will be informed sooner rather than later if they are part of his plans.
“Obviously, I have seen a lot and that’s good,” Van Gaal added.
“Because then I can give my opinion and also what their perspectives are in the future and then they can choose.
“We have to be honest. We have to give advice to the players now at this moment and not at the end of August. Then we can’t change anymore and they don’t have a choice. Of course it’s difficult to say something after two weeks but I think you have to say something.”
With less than four weeks to go, there is still expected to be a lot of movement in and out of Old Trafford with the likes of Nani, Anderson and Javier Hernandez all potentially on their way out, so it could be a frantic end to the transfer window once again for United.
