Manchester United are considering making an £8 million bid for Nigel De Jong, as per Sport Mediaset from Italy.
De Jong, 29, is currently in the final year of his contract with AC Milan and Sport Mediaset has reported talks have opened up between United and the player’s representatives.
With the pursuit of Arturo Vidal seemingly no closer to a conclusion, Louis van Gaal will be keen to further strengthen his midfield and the former Manchester City player could provide some stability behind Ander Herrera and Juan Mata.
The holding midfielder was first linked with a move to Old Trafford back in June when the Daily Express reported that Van Gaal was interested in bringing in De Jong to provide a short-term solution to United’s shortcomings in midfield.
Darren Fletcher performed extremely well in the central midfield role during the pre-season tour of the US but United would be startlingly short of options of no new midfielders came in to the squad. The injury to Michael Carrick, who is out for at least three months with an ankle problem, means that United are short in both quality and personnel.
De Jong could provide the experience and leadership that Carrick would have provided and in a short-term, he could be the perfect addition if Van Gaal did want to hold out for Kevin Strootman.
