Warren Joyce’s Manchester United side will travel to Ewen Fields today to face Manchester City in the Manchester Senior Cup.
City’s youngsters concluded their week in Germany with a game against Czech side Slovan Liberec in which they lost 2-1 after other pre-season games saw them lose 2-1 to Bayern Munich’s Under-23 side as well as another 2-1 defeat to FC Nurnberg.
Where City’s youngsters have had disappointing defeats, United have enjoyed a good array of pre-season performances including an impressive 5-0 win over Altrincham as well as a 2-1 win over League One side Barnsley.
United have won the MSC an impressive 27 times and will be looking to add to that tonight. Qualification for the final was actually secured last season in a 4-0 win over Bolton Wanderers in which both Adnan Januzaj and Wilfried Zaha got on the score sheet.
Angelo Henriquez is expected to miss out through injury as well as youngster Donald Love who was withdrawn shortly after coming on as a second half substitute against Barnsley. Tom Thorpe, who captained United last time out, will be looking to impress yet again. James Wilson, who came off the bench against Barnsley, is in contention for a starting place.
There is a possibility that some youngsters that featured on the tour may be able to make an appearance depending on their fitness levels and of course whether or not Van Gaal is looking for them to take part in the last pre-season friendly against Valencia.
With Thorpe impressing last time out as captain, he should be playing a pivotal role in defence and players such as Joe Rothwell and Ben Pearson could be critical in midfield.
With a strong United side looking to win the MSC for the 28th time, there should be some positive attacking football on display from the reds.
Manchester United 2-1 Manchester City
The Manchester Senior Cup tie will kick off at 7pm. The game will be shown live on MUTVHD, with the programme airing at 6:30pm.
