Paris St Germain have ruled themselves out of a move for Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria due to his price and Manchester United are now considered frontrunners to sign him were he to leave Madrid this summer.
Di Maria, 26, has been strongly linked with both PSG and United since his World Cup exploits with Argentina and like Mesut Ozil last summer, Real look happy to sell one of their big name players in order to fund the likes of James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos.
Speaking at the unveiling of David Luiz, PSG chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi confirmed holding talks with Real about Di Maria but cited the winger being too expensive for PSG to try and sign him: “We spoke to Real about Di Maria but he was too expensive.”
PSG’s reluctance to overpay for Di Maria has more to do with the fact they need to comply with FFP rules and have already signed David Luiz more than anything else. As an oil rich club, they could afford pretty much every player in the world if they were allowed to spend as much as they wanted.
For United, it does put the club in a stronger position now that PSG have ruled themselves out of the running as competition for his signature has decreased but there are certainly some concerns over Di Maria’s price tag.
Spanish newspaper Marca have placed a staggering €80m price on his head which may well be over inflated but the fact is that after how he performed last season, Di Maria would certainly cost a pretty penny.
Should Louis van Gaal consider making a move for Di Maria?
