Paul Merson has singled out Luke Shaw as a young player to watch in the Premier League this season and backed him to ‘become a star worth £80m one day’ if he can fulfil his potential.
Shaw, 19, has already made nearly 70 Premier League appearances and now has some real pressure on his shoulders of a £27m move to Manchester United this summer.
There is a real belief he can become United and England’s left-back for the next decade as he has already shown at such a young age how much potential he has, something Merson has clearly bought into.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said: “He’s likely to be playing wing-back, which is a nightmare shift running up and down the wing at Old Trafford every week and I always like to see how people handle pressure.
“It’s a big thing and if he starts playing well then he will become a star worth £80million one day. He could be that good.”
Comparisons with Bale are going to be impossible for Shaw to avoid given that both started their careers as left-back academy graduates from Southampton, and he could do worse than replicate what the Welshman has done in his career.
Shaw has endured a tough start at United as Louis van Gaal is determined to get more out of him than any manager has before and because he is going to be pushed above and beyond himself, there certainly is every chance he could grow into a superstar at Old Trafford.
