Louis van Gaal has once again reiterated that Manchester United’s current squad is unbalanced and he feels the side is currently missing a winger who is good as Cristiano Ronaldo or Angel di Maria.
This summer, Real Madrid’s Di Maria has been consistently linked with a move to Old Trafford which makes Van Gaal’s decision to name-drop all the more surprising, given how tight lipped he has remained about targets up until this point.
As for Ronaldo, his return remains a pipe dream but with Ed Woodward claiming United are serious about breaking the transfer-record, the messages from the club are there that the funds are there for it.
When asked about Woodward being prepared to break the world transfer record, Van Gaal said: “It is a strategy of Manchester United to do that. At this moment, we have five No.9s and four No.10s – and we don’t have wingers to give us attacking width.
“Or, I should say, we don’t have wingers of the highest level, like Ronaldo or Di Maria or somebody like that. So, I have to play in another way – and you have seen that already. I only buy when I think we need to buy – in the position that is necessary.”
Up until this point, Van Gaal has mainly remained tight lipped with regards to naming names so either the Daily Mail completely fabricated these quotes or it’s really interesting to see Van Gaal discuss Di Maria in the public domain.
Paris St Germain ruled themselves out of a move for Di Maria because of his his high price tag and if United do have a limitless cash pool, look no further than Di Maria for a world-class and available winger.
