Rafael Benitez has dismissed discussions of a move for Marouane Fellaini any further and insisted the club wants to focus on their current midfielders to ensure they get the best out of them.
Fellaini, 26, is not expected to be part of Louis van Gaal‘s plans next season according to reports and has regularly been linked with a loan move to Napoli after a disappointing debut campaign at Old Trafford.
However, despite confirming that Fellaini was on a list of midfielders Napoli were looking at, Benitez has now emphasised that he intends to trust his current crop rather than focus on bringing on new faces.
“I focus on the midfielders I have here, we need to trust them to play well the next games,” Benitez said.
Like so many United players, Fellaini’s future at the club under Van Gaal looks far from secure because he doesn’t look like the type of midfielder who the Dutchman wants to have in his team.
Pedestrian and unimaginative in possession, Fellaini’s brute force style of football is almost the polar opposite of Van Gaal’s dynamic and high tempo football, so a move away from United could be the best solution for all parties.
