Predicted XI: Manchester United vs Valencia – Triple debut for United, Fletcher captain

by Tom Newbold

David de Gea – Manchester United’s No.1 will start against his native Spanish opposition.

Chris Smalling – If Smalling has sufficiently recovered from his injury on tour, he will start this game.

Phil Jones – As Louis van Gaal plays three at the back, Jones can expect to spend a lot of time in his favoured centre-back position this year.

Jonny Evans – Evans should complete the line-up for Van Gaal’s first choice back three.

Antonio Valencia – Despite Ashley Young impressing at both RWB and LWB, Valencia is still the obvious choice for this position.

Ander Herrera – Herrera may make up one of three Spanish players to start against the team from Valencia in what will be his debut at Old Trafford.

Darren Fletcher – Fletcher will likely captain the side once again.

Luke Shaw – Shaw may get the nod ahead of Ashley Young. Big game for the youngster as it’ll be his Old Trafford debut.

Juan Mata – The former Valencia  man will be relishing this fixture.

Wayne Rooney – Rooney has had a good pre-season and will be hoping that continues.

Javier Hernandez – With doubts remaining about Danny Welbeck’s fitness, it can be assumed that Chicharito will start this friendly.

Formation: 3-4-1-2

Louis van Gaal may well select his strongest side against Valencia in preparation for Saturday’s Premier League opener but expect wholesale changes at half-time to keep the team fresh.
