All three were given extended holidays by the boss because of their participation in the World Cup and will have to continue working in training before they get the chance to impress Van Gaal.
“The players have to be fit and the first thing you can do is be fit,” Van Gaal told MUTV.
“I don’t think they are fit after one week of training sessions. Surely not, when you compare it with players I have already trained.
“It is more difficult as they are not as the same level as the players we have trained already and have already played 45 minutes, 60 minutes or 90 minutes. So that is difficult. They came later, like Januzaj, Fellaini and van Persie so it is difficult to start at the same level. So we have to adjust and that is difficult.”
Van Persie’s absence from the game against Swansea was expected but there still remains a hope that Januzaj will be fit in time for the season opener.
Although Van Gaal will be itching to get every member of his squad back again, there’s no rush in bringing them back for a friendly if it could jeopardise their fitness in the long run and that’s precisely what the Dutchman is doing by leaving them out.
