As Bayern’s Javi Martinez has been ruled out for six months following an injury last week, Benatia is considered to be a direct replacement for him in defence.
It was only yesterday that Sky Sports News’ Jim White claimed Benatia was on his way to Manchester United so within the space of 24 hours, Benatia has been heavily linked with moves for two separate clubs.
United’s need for an experienced defender was made abundantly clear in the loss against Swansea but with Bayern now in the running for Benatia, there will be stiff competition for his signature.
Roma are brushing off speculation and CEO Italo Zanzi has reacted angrily to the Benatia rumours, denying any deal had already been done.
“Mehdi is our player,” he said.
“According to some media sources he had already been sold, but instead he is training with us in a very professional manner.
“It’s a shame about all these rumours. He is a great person and is behaving in the best possible way.
“The transfer market is dynamic and until September 1 we will evaluate every opportunity and ensure we are ready [for the new season].”
