Player Ratings: Manchester United 1-2 Swansea: Rooney the best of a bad bunch

by Sam Peoples

David de Gea – 5: Could have done better with Sigurdsson’s winner. Distribution was slow too.

Jesse Lingard – N/A: Lingard went off on a stretcher early on.

Tyler Blackett – 5: Flustered by the occasion. Still performed OK but that wasn’t good enough to stop Swansea scoring.

Chris Smalling – 5: Smalling also didn’t have enough presence to defend his own box.

Phil Jones – 6.5: Great last ditch tackling at points but they were born out of his old errors.

Ashley Young – 5: Struggled on both the left and right-wing.

Juan Mata – 5.5: Muted performance from Mata who is capable far better.

Ander Herrera – 5.5: Herrera struggled with Swansea’s strength and was unable to control the game from midfield like he usually does.

Wayne Rooney – 6.5:  Great goal to score with an acrobatic finish. Rooney could be one to watch this year.

Javier Hernandez – 5: It’s painfully obvious how Hernandez simply does not fit Van Gaal’s ethos. He didn’t have one attempt on goal.

Substitute

Adnan Januzaj – 6: Came on and made a difference in the second half down the right-wing. Very direct, very No.11, but end product was lacking.

Nani – 4: A casual performance from Nani who almost played like his mind was elsewhere.

Marouane Fellaini – 5: Fellaini came on and was asked to do a job. He did precisely that. Nothing to write home about but Fellaini did well.
