Josh Harrop impresses on full debut for Manchester United’s Under-21s

by Tracey Germaine

Following his impressive display in the Manchester Senior Cup, Josh Harrop was handed his first start in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League for the opening match of the season against Norwich City.

He played in a fluid midfield three alongside Ben Pearson and Joe Rothwell as Warren Joyce experimented with the 5-3-2 formation favoured by Louis Van Gaal in the first-team.

At times, Harrop was playing in a holding midfield role sitting in front of the back three while at others he would venture forward. His passing was crisp.

Speaking in an interview before the match Harrop admitted he had hard work ahead of him in the gym to improve his physique and said in particular he wanted to work on his upper body strength. However, he adapted well to the physicality of the game and wasn’t shy in putting himself about, and making challenges.

Harrop capped off his fine performance with a beautiful goal after a one-two with Joe Rothwell to seal the 3-0 victory over Norwich City that sent United to the top of the league.

It was a great full debut for Harrop and he’ll be one to watch with the Under-21s this year.
