Carlo Ancelotti has revealed for the first time that Angel di Maria has rejected a contract renewal and asked to leave Real Madrid.
The 26-year-old winger has been heavily linked with a move away from Madrid all summer and now Ancelotti has confirmed his desire to leave, it is clear Madrid want to sell him as well.
Madrid changing their stance on Di Maria and telling the press he wants to leave is an indication that interest in the Argentinian has been muted, which comes as no surprise given that Madrid were demanding in the region of £50-60m for him.
However, now it is public knowledge that Di Maria has put in a transfer request and Madrid are keen to sell him, his price will become more negotiable and although PSG have previously ruled themselves out of the running for him, their interest will be reignited by this change in circumstances.
Previously, Louis van Gaal specifically named Angel di Maria as the type of world class player the club lacked: “It is a strategy of Manchester United to do that. At this moment, we have five No.9s and four No.10s – and we don’t have wingers to give us attacking width.
“Or, I should say, we don’t have wingers of the highest level, like Ronaldo or Di Maria or somebody like that. So, I have to play in another way – and you have seen that already. I only buy when I think we need to buy – in the position that is necessary.”
Di Maria has asked to leave, Madrid want to sell and Van Gaal has named Di Maria as a player he admires. Ed Woodward has said United are in the position to make a marquee signing and Madrid have presented the opportunity.
