Manchester United’s confirm Marcos Rojo transfer

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United have signed Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon in a £16m deal.

The 24-year-old becomes the third major summer signing after Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera and becomes the second defender to join the club following the departures of Rio Ferinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra.

United’s pursuit of Rojo was complicated by Sporting’s confrontation with Doyen Sports over his economic rights but after drawn out negotiations, Louis van Gaal was able to land his man.

Adept at both centre-back and left-back, Rojo is the left footed defender Louis van Gaal was keen to sign and he could be put straight into the team for the game against Sunderland this weekend.

Rojo wouldn’t have been a name many United fans would have had on their list of ideal defensive signings at the start of the summer but after playing in the World Cup final and subsequently being named in the Team of the Tournament, Rojo has shown he can compete at the highest level.

Welcome to Manchester, Rojo.
