Manchester United continued their Barclays Under-21s league campaign with a hard fought 1-1 draw against Liverpool.
Playing at Anfield, United’s goal came from talented winger Tom Lawrence who was filling the void upfront left by James Wilson. Liverpool’s goal was scored by Jordan Lussey.
United were without Wilson and Nick Powell as the duo had been training with the firs-team this week and Warren Joyce once again utilised the 3-5-2 formation.
The first half was a cagey affair with neither team really able to test the opposition keeper. The battle was carried out in the middle of the park as both teams tried to seize control, with Ben Pearson and newcomer Josh Harrop putting in a few tasty challenges.
United’s best chance of the first half came shortly after Liverpool had struck the post when Andreas Pereira found Paddy McNair alone in the box with a glorious free kick, only for the Irish defender to side foot his volley onto the post.
The second half started much the same with neither team making changes at the break. The game was kicked into life in the 64th minute when Jordan Lussey put Liverpool in front with a well placed free kick.
Forced to come out of their shell, United instantly hit back. A great passing move ended with second half substitute James Weir tricking his way past three Liverpool players and then crossing to Lawrence for an easy tap in.
Both teams pushed for a winner late on in the game and Liverpool could have snatched it at the death as United’s defenders made a schoolboy error by not playing to whistle, thus allowing Liverpool’s No.14 in on goal, only to be thwarted by Joel Pereira.
The last five minutes were very scrappy with both teams picking up bookings. All in all, 1-1 was a fair result.
