Warren Joyce’s side will look to continue from last week’s 2-0 win over Norwich City with a trip to Anfield tonight to face a Liverpool side who won their opening fixture 1-0 away at Sunderland.
Andreas Pereira was the only goalscorer in last season’s corresponding fixture and the 18-year-old is most likely going to feature again, although James Wilson may be ruled out having only just rejoined the first team in training this week after his injury.
Last time out, a 3-5-2 formation was deployed for the first time at Leigh Sports Village in a game where Varela switched from a wing back position to a more unfamiliar position in the centre of defence to replace Sean Goss.
Joyce’s side have looked very impressive, having overcome Manchester City and Norwich by three goal deficits in their last two games, but will face a very tough test in Friday night’s derby. After an impressive pre-season, the Liverpool youngsters will be looking to get all three points against a confident United side.
Another predicted 3-5-2 formation might be set up but it is unlikely to contain Wilson, who is the only notable absentee after recently coming back from injury to train with the first-team. Wilson bagged four goals in the Manchester Senior Cup final in an impressive 4-1 win over Manchester City two week ago.
Having beaten Man City and Norwich by three goal margins in the past two weeks, I’m going to go for a United win as they’ve got the confidence and squad to be able to get all three points. The missing Wilson may play a big factor in a game of this magnitude but United should come out with the win, albeit a hard fought one.
Liverpool 0-1 Manchester United
The game will be live on MUTV from Anfield. Kick-off is 19:00 GMT.
