The signing of Angel di Maria would give Louis van Gaal a real world class problem – what formation does he use to accommodate his top players?
So far at Manchester United, Van Gaal has gone with the 3-5-2 formation he used with Holland at the World Cup as he felt it best served the qualities of the squad.
Will that still be the case if Di Maria arrives?
What formation and starting XI would you choose? Leave yours in the comments.
It’s a far from ideal formation. Herrera might have the tenacity and tackling ability to play a deeper holding midfield role but his assets are best used further up the pitch. The same goes for Mata.
As for Di Maria, this formation would see him play more centrally but his strength comes with his ability on the wings.
The crux of the problem for United this season is how Van Gaal accommodates Rooney and Van Persie in the same starting XI because for both to play, others have to miss out or potentially play slightly out of position.
Rooney is Van Gaal’s captain so he’ll play every game he is fully fit, so does that mean Van Persie is the more dispensable player of the pair?
It’s an issue which Van Gaal would clearly have thought about prior to sanctioning a move for Di Maria but it will certainly be interesting to see what tactic he does decide to use.
