Real Madrid want Manchester United’s Guillermo Varela on loan – report

by Sam Peoples

Tuttomercatoweb have reported that Real Madrid are close to completing a season long loan move for Manchester United’s Guillermo Varela.

TMW report that the deal will see Real Madrid have a right to make the deal permanent for nearly €5m and prevent Varela from returning to United.

Varela, 21, has settled in at United after a shaky start and has impressed from right-back with the Under-21s, enough so that Madrid are interested in signing him according to TMW.

The young Uruguayan right back, who was the last signing by Sir Alex Ferguson, endured a stop-start first season with the club. Even before he could start to settle in, he had to go back to Uruguay in December due to family reasons. Though there were rumours that he wouldn’t return to United initially, he came come back and played for the United’s Under-21 side.

Varela is a fast, hard working, attacking right-back but has played at left-back too (recently). Given the first team’s lack of options at right-back, an opportunity for Varela could be just around the corner.

But, if there is any truth in these claims from TMW, it remains to be seen if he’ll stay and fight for a place or if he’ll want to leave United to go to a country where the language and culture would be much easier for him to adapt to.
