Louis van Gaal has hailed new signing Angel di Maria as a ‘class player’ but also highlighted the importance of the Argentinian’s team work.

Di Maria, who signed from Real Madrid for a club and English record fee, was unveiled by the club at an official press conference yesterday where he spoke of his delight at signing for United and thanked the manager for choosing him.

Van Gaal also revealed he felt Di Maria fits the club’s philosophy and the 26-year-old’s arrival will allow him to be more flexible with his team selections.

“I only buy players that can improve our philosophy,” van Gaal said.

“I can change the system with him and maybe we shall do that in the future. He played at Real Madrid not only as a winger but also in midfield. That’s a reason why we are convinced he shall succeed.

“I am very pleased that we can have such a class player in our squad, but for me it is important that he is a team player. He can accelerate the game for us but he can also play in the interest of the team. But we cannot expect after two days of training that he is the miracle. You have to work for the miracle and he knows that.”

Di Maria’s arrival will undoubtedly give United an extra dimension to their play and he will add much-needed pace to a squad bereft of confidence. The Argentine’s signing could give the club a similar lift to the one Mesut Ozil’s signing at Arsenal provided last summer.

Unlike compatriot Marcos Rojo, Di Maria is available for selection immediately, meaning he could make his debut against Burnley at Turf Moor.
