Representatives from Manchester United will be in attendance tonight for Sporting Lisbon’s clash against Benfica to watch William Carvalho in action, according to O Jogo.
The 22-year-old is in Sporting’s starting XI tonight as is United’s Nani who is on loan at Sporting following a deal to bring Marcos Rojo to Old Trafford.
United’s scouts were in attendance almost every week last season to watch Carvalho in action but nothing has materialised despite the heavy speculation.
However, United being in Portugal tonight would be strange if the club had absolutely no intention of considering a move for Carvalho, maybe this summer or possibly in January as well.
Louis van Gaal was happy to sign Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera, who were both Moyes targets, and being present to see Carvalho in action again suggests there is a continuation with regards to some of United’s transfer targets.
This week has seen contrasting reports on interest in Carvalho but with just over 24 hours to go, there is technically still time for a deal to be wrapped up.
That being said, given how much United have already spent this summer, deadline day activity is expected to be more about departures than any more arrivals.
You can watch Carvalho in action tonight against Benfica and the kick-off is at 7pm GMT.
Update: Carvalho completed the full 90 minutes for Sporting Lisbon and was asked whether he was going to leave the club this summer: “Leaving? I’m under contract with Sporting.”
