Danny Welbeck, Longsight born, Manchester bred, Mancunian through and through, is now an Arsenal player.
Ever since he was a young lad, Welbeck has been at United. He worked his way through the ranks at United through hard graft and determination.
Eventually, he was rewarded with a place in the first-team and never looked back since, but that’s now all in the past after the 23-year-old completed his move to Arsenal.
The London club have released the first images of him in an Arsenal kit and for staunch Welbeck fans, it’s tough to see. It looks wrong.
A move away for Welbeck in the circumstances was understandable as Louis van Gaal made it clear to him he wouldn’t be first choice behind Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and now Radamel Falcao.
He wanted to play football, he wasn’t going to get it at United, he asked to leave. Comparisons with Rooney’s transfer request are wide of the mark. Rooney was a top earner at United and the centre of attention, Welbeck was a sidekick who wanted his career to progress, but moving to Arsenal is a sickener.
If Van Gaal made it clear to Welbeck he’d get opportunities this season, he’d have stayed, but the Dutchman told him straight and Welbeck made the decision to leave.
Now is when we’ll see what Welbeck can really do. In his preferred central striking role, he’ll have the opportunity to flourish and there’s every chance he’ll fulfil the promise which a lot of United fans felt he had.
Unfortunately, we’ll have to hear about it every week.
