Manchester United have some fantastic attacking options at their disposal this season and Louis van Gaal is faced with the sort of problem every football manager wants to have – how can you fit all of these players into the same line-up?
The fact is that you can’t. Somebody will have to be sacrificed and unfortunately for Robin van Persie, he could be the player who has to settle for a lesser role in the side.
Ander Herrera and Angel di Maria would probably play on their natural sides of midfield but this is just a demonstration of the players and formation.
Alternatively, Rooney could drop into the No.10 role leaving Van Persie to play up front alongside Falcao. In that scenario, Mata is the player who will lose out.
Of course, Van Gaal is a staunch advocate of his own philosophy but if United were to play with five defenders, then it would be even harder to keep United’s attackers happy. Is 4-3-3 the solution?
One of Sir Alex Ferguson‘s greatest traits was his ability to keep a squad of superstars happy and Van Gaal will now have to do precisely the same if he is to make sure all everybody gets enough playing time.
Van Gaal’s cause wasn’t helped by United’s early exit from the Capital One Cup it means United only have the Premier League and FA Cup to play this season.
