Radamel Falcao has revealed he was in talks with Manchester United ‘for some months’ despite joining the club at the last minute on transfer deadline day.
When news broke in Colombia linking United with a move for Falcao, it was a complete surprise to everybody as the striker hadn’t ever been considered a target.
However, United had already held talks with Falcao and his agent Jorge Mendes but kept it all under wraps from the press.
“I am very proud to be at Manchester United,” Falcao told reporters away on international duty with Colombia.
“We’d been in talks with the club for some months and in the end, we were able to reach an agreement with Monaco on the last day of the transfer deadline.”
The fact United managed to keep the negotiations private until deadline day is a testament to how well some of the transfers were conducted this summer, especially in comparison to last year where United’s dealings were very much public knowledge.
It also goes to show how complicated a move for Falcao was because United were unable to unveil the 28-year-old until 1.30am after the deadline had passed.
United fans can’t wait to see Falcao in action and the Colombian is equally as excited to simply be playing football again.
He added: “I haven’t had the opportunity to speak with the players but although they are stars, they are also footballers who play for the team to achieve the common goal.
“I am sure this will be the basis of our success and in any team who wants to achieve important things.
“I trusted in god to return to football. I have worked very hard every day to achieve and thank god my work paid off. I look forward to coming back and scoring goals and feeling relaxed about it.”
