Robin van Persie’s poor form continues to raise questions about fitness

Robin van Persie was substituted after an uneventful 80 minutes in Holland’s 2-0 loss tonight as his slow return to full fitness continues.

Van Persie is yet to play a full 90 minutes this season and although the Dutchman has denied rumours he needs to have surgery on a knee ligament injury, there is concern about what role he will be able to play this season.

There was always going to be some concern about Van Persie’s fitness this year because of what has happened in the past six months.

Van Persie’s knee injury against Olympiacos ruled him out of the last few months of United’s season but he worked his way back to fitness in time for the World Cup.

While he started off in blistering form in Brazil, Van Persie very much petered out as the tournament went on and was clearly suffering from exhaustion.

It was no surprise that Van Persie was given an extended break to recuperate but so far this season for United, and now Holland, his form has been poor.

Hopefully it is just a case of Van Persie working his way back to full fitness but Van Gaal’s decision to bring in Radamel Falcao may well be indicative that even he has concerns over Van Persie.
