Back in yesteryear, the number a footballer wore correlated to their position on the pitch.
Although that tradition has been lost in the passing of time, there is still a certain romanticism that numbers carry. At United, the No.7 is steeped in a history of its own as are others such as No.11 and No.9.
In 1998/99, United’s No.7-11 comprised of David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Andy Cole, Teddy Sheringham and Ryan Giggs. They all played major roles in what was United’s most successful ever season.
This year, for the first time in a long time, No.7-11 are all occupied by top quality players at United. Angel di Maria, Juan Mata, Radamel Falcao, Wayne Rooney and Adnan Januzaj. It almost sounds like an attack force created in fantasy football, and fans are certainly hoping the football they do play does end up being out of this world.
There is so much to be excited about this season following the closure of the transfer window. Van Gaal, a new philosophy, a new attitude, Falcao, Di Maria, Herrera et al. The bad taste of last season has been washed away in that respect.
This is a new look United kick-starting a new era but here’s hoping they can kick back to the club’s traditional roots, No.7-11 and all, and do it well.
Attack, attack, attack.
