After a poor debut season with the club following his £27.5m move from Everton, it seemed Manchester United were ready to let Fellaini leave this summer but the Belgian picked up an ankle injury before any move came to fruition.
Napoli were interested in signing Fellaini and although Rafael Benitez called him a great player, the Italian side were under the impression he wanted to stay and fight for his place.
Belgian newspaper SportWereld say Fellaini held talks with Van Gaal and the outcome was positive, with the Dutchman promising Fellaini the chance to impress him and put his doubters wrong after last year.
This season, Van Gaal will be looking for a balance in midfield after spending £150m reshaping the squad. With Daley Blind brought in to anchor the midfield, it’s possible that Fellaini’s promised role could be to compete with the new signing.
With Michael Carrick sidelined with an ankle injury of his own and Darren Fletcher failing to impress since the season began, Fellaini will have a chance. Whether or not he takes it remains to be seen.
