Louis van Gaal has allayed fears Robin van Persie is finding it difficult to regain his full match fitness by insisting he has never seen the striker in better shape.
Van Persie missed the start of United’s season because he was given an extended post-World Cup holiday which came as no surprise to anybody.
The 31-year-old was physically exhausted by the end of the World Cup in Brazil and since then he has not been sharp at all this season so far either for Manchester United or Holland.
However, Van Gaal is confident of Van Persie’s current fitness: “I think he is fitter than before the World Cup because he was injured. I let him train for three weeks and now he is fitter than ever.”
The way Van Persie is currently playing suggests he is not yet 100% fit but having dismissed reports he’ll need knee surgery, he is also confident of returning to full fitness soon.
When United bought Van Persie there was always the inherent injury risk that came with it and the Dutchman’s season last year was ravaged by them.
There is certainly a fear that history could repeat itself again but with both Van Persie and Van Gaal confident that won’t be the case, United fans will continue to hope he’ll be back at full fitness sooner rather than later.
