Marcos Rojo enjoys confident Manchester United debut

by Richard Laverty

Marcos Rojo signing for Manchester United went slightly under the radar, especially given the Argentinian couldn’t make his debut for the club until the QPR match due to issues over his work permit.

Whilst Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera and Daley Blind wowed the crowd, Rojo was solid at left-back on his debut.

The new No.5 is more accustomed to playing in a centre-back role but his impressive performance at left-back will come as no surprise to anyone who watched the former Sporting Lisbon man play there for World Cup finalists Argentina in Brazil.

Rojo won the majority of his aerial battles, was strong in the tackle and almost set up United’s first goal with a bombarding run into the box, only to see Robin van Persie appear to take the ball away from an on-rushing Ander Herrera.

Besides a small mix-up with goalkeeper David De Gea which almost cost United the lead at 1-0 in the first half, Rojo was steady throughout the 90 minutes and United fans will be hoping he can continue such form when he inevitably moves inside to make room for fellow new signing Luke Shaw.

The man who now dons the shirt worn formerly by Rio Ferdinand has big shoes to fill but a solid debut and a clean sheet will give the defender confidence going forward.
