U21s: Manchester United 4-0 Sunderland: Stunning Januzaj hat-trick seals win

by Tracey Germaine

A strong Manchester United side beat Sunderland 4-0 this evening at Old Trafford thanks in no small part to a wonderful Adnan Januzaj hat-trick.

The Under-21s were bolstered with the inclusion of first team squad members Januzaj, Luke Shaw and Anderson and raced to a 3-0 lead before half-time, with a brace from Januzaj sandwiching a left-footed strike from Pereira. Januzaj completed his hat-trick in the second half to complete the scoring.

It was a dominant first half from United who were adjusting to the 4-4-2 formation with a midfield diamond, deployed with such effect by the first team against QPR. It was one-way traffic for the majority of the game and Januzaj gave the Reds the lead after 19 minutes with a left-footed finish after being picked out by Will Keane.

Three minutes later Pereira, who was included in the match-day squad for the first team, doubled the lead. Shaw provided the assist, which Pereira controlled with his right and then finished with his left.

Then in the 27th minute Januzaj scored his second, this time with a right footed finish. Both Shaw and Will Keane were involved in the build up. Shaw finding Keane, who controlled the ball brilliantly and then picked out Januzaj for his brace. He could have added a third soon after but his shot went wide.

The second half was a quieter affair with fewer chances. Ben Pearson recovered from a slight hamstring strain picked up on international duty and replaced Luke Shaw, who got a decent 45 minutes under his belt. Tom Thorpe who pulled the strings in a less familiar role as defensive midfielder dropped back as Marnick Vermijl moved out to left-back.

Januzaj finally got his hat-trick goal, having played a neat one-two with Marnick Vermijl, he finished with his left and then was immediately replaced by James Weir.

Manchester United: Amos, Janko, McNair, Vermijl, Shaw (Pearson 45′), Thorpe (c), Harrop, Anderson (Rothwell), A. Pereira, Januzaj (Weir), W. Keane.

Unused substitutes: O’Hara, Grimshaw.

Men of the Match: Januzaj, Thorpe.
