Louis van Gaal watches Man United’s Under-21s in action as youth involvement continues

Louis van Gaal was at Old Trafford tonight to watch Manchester United’s Under-21s in action.

Adnan Januzaj stole the spotlight with a wonderful hat-trick while fellow first-team member Andreas Pereira scored the fourth with an equally impressive left foot finish.

It was the first Under-21s game where Van Gaal’s attendance has been confirmed and provides further evidence to show how important the youth will be for the Dutchman.

Tyler Blackett started his fourth consecutive Premier League game on the weekend while the likes of Januzaj, James, Wilson, Pereira and the Keane brothers have all been in and around the first-team squad already this season.

United were accused of losing their identity after a summer in which £150m was spent on bringing in some of the world’s best players but the statement couldn’t be further from the truth.

Traditionally, United have always competed for the best players and over the years have broke multiple transfer records all without abandoning the youth, which is precisely what has happened this year.

The only identity that United have lost is being a club who pays more money on interest repayments than player transfers. The real United has returned.
